    • The eye is caught by this antique Ching Dynasty (1644-1911) porcelain shard of a bird sitting on a branch, eyeing a flower for its nectar. The colours are still vivid, in greens, rose, yellows, red and black. And the bird is quite lively, which is true to the Chinese porcelain of the period, hand painted in enamels and individually crafted by artisans. The oval shard is 4 cm long and 2.5 cm wide and has been framed in a Chinese silver, which is often low grade, but a silver none the less.
    • Chinese porcelain shards are simply bits of antique porcelain reclaimed from broken plates, cups, vases and other such pieces. But because they are so beautifully created, even fragments like this are works of art. The Cultural Revolution destroyed so much art of the past, which is why even fragments of antique porcelain are treasured.
    • Above the shard is an aventurine cylinder (10 mm), a black glass disc handmade in China, a vintage, handmade silver bead (14 mm), made in Afghanistan, and an aventurine, hand carved puzzle ball, or a ball within a ball (10.5 mm).
    • These all hang on an emerald green multi-strand band of PVC covered stainless steel.
    • The clasp is magnetic stainless steel and my silver name label hangs on the band itself.
    • The necklace comes, like all my necklaces, with its own colour co-ordinated silk brocaded pouch bag, made by a Shanghai tailor.
    • Length 44 cm (17 1/4") with a pendant drop of 8 cm (3 1/4").
