Inspired by Mughla India, Jade Feather on Aventurine Necklace
- The Mughal emperors, from the early 16th century through to the early 18th century, built and ruled the Mughal Empire on the Indian subcontinent (mainly corresponding to the modern countries of India, Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh). The Mughals were a branch of the Timurid dynasty of Turkic origin. The Mughals also had significant Indian Rajput and Persian ancestry through marriage alliances.
- These national influences brought the designs of the Mughal jewellery to intricate heights of craftsmanship and design. They took finely carved, celadon, nephrite jade and combined it with rubies, emeralds and 18k, yellow gold
- I have been inspired by the essence and colours of these Mughal craftsmen, but without the exorbitant price
- the carved, celadon, nephrite jade feather 2 ½ inches long ( 6.4 cm) and 1 inch wide (2.5 cm) and 6.6 mm deep. The feather is an emblem of hope.
- Above the feather, there is a carved puzzle ball of nephrite jade(a ball carved with another ball within, all from one piece of jade (11.5 mm).
- And finally, this is topped by a small, 18K vintage gold bead (7.6 mm).
- The necklace itself is made up of three strands of aventurine beads. The majority of these beads are in the form of emerald coloured brick shaped beads (4 mm x 10 mm).
- These are followed at the base of the necklace by 3 mm round beads in the colour of a pink ruby.
- Aventurine, often mistaken for jade, is actually a gemstone variety of quartz, characterized by its translucency and metallic inclusions. These glittery inclusions are made up of muscovite mica, which results in medium to dark green colour stones. Aventurine has a grainy texture in its rough state, but displays an attractive soft lustre when polished. It is found in many places, including South America, India and Russia.
- I have used a vermeil toggle clasp. Toggle clasps are easy to use and secure. My silver name label is attached at the clasp.
- The necklace comes, like all my necklaces, with its own colour co-ordinated silk brocaded pouch bag, made by a Shanghai tailor. The necklace is 18 ½ inches long (47 cm) with a 3 inch pendant drop ((8 cm).
