The Warm Hues of Caramel and Celadon Imbue the Jade Fan, Amber Beads and Gold
- A fan in Chinese culture is symbolic of Imperial power as well of goodness. A bride on her wedding day brings a fan to indicate that she brings goodness to the marriage.
- This carved jadeite fan is of celadon laced with a caramel colouring, which is the natural colouration of this piece of jade. It is beautifully carved (you can imagine the fan opening and closing) while on the surface floats a carp (which is emblematic of wealth) and a RuYi, which has the meaning of “all that you can wish for”. This indicates that the pendant is intended as a gift of love. It measures 1 ¾” (4cm) long and 3” wide (7.5 cm).
- There are two golden pieces of amber, one an opaque nugget (16mm) and the other a transparent bead (10mm).
- An antique, gold, handmade Afghan bead (20mm). is the next element. This is gold-on-silver-on-hardened resin, which the Afghans took on as a technique which they learned from the Greeks, who invaded Afghanistan in 330 BC. This is a time-consuming skill.
- The handmade toffee coloured silk/polyester band’s clasp consists of a 14ct gold vermeil toggle clasp, which is easy to sue and secure. My silver label is attached at the ring.
- The necklace comes, like all my necklaces, with its own colour co-ordinated silk brocaded pouch bag, made by a Shanghai tailor.
- The necklace measures 18” long (46cm) with a 3 ¼ ” pendant drop (8.5 cm)
